The #1 SEO Mistake – Are you Guilty?

I’ve made a post in the past listing what I thought were the most common SEO mistakes, but based on what I’ve experienced over the last few months, helping people with their SEO, this to me has to be the #1 SEO Mistake. I’ve not talked about it at any great length before, as I only recently spotted how common this mistake was after judging a backlink building competition at the Affiliate Power Group

So here it is, the #1 SEO mistake that I see (again and again!).

Not Putting Your Keyword Phrase in the Anchor Text

For anyone who doesn’t know what I mean by this, I mean putting the keywords that you have chosen (for the page you are linking to) in the clickable text of the link, every time you create a backlink (a link from another site to your own site).

Example:
<a href=”http://www.3stepstosearchenginesuccess.com/free-seo-course.php”>Free SEO Course</a>

In the above HTML I am using the keywords “free SEO course” to link to a page on my site that is optimized for “Free SEO Course”. This would create a link like this – Free SEO Course.

If you want to get ranked for a keyword, getting backlinks to your site containing that keyword in the anchor text is probably the most important thing you can do.

I often find that people have built hundreds of links to their website containing some other keyword, or a few random words in the anchor text. Although it is good to throw in a few of these to make your links look natural, this is not going to help you get ranked highly for your keywords.

Another related mistake that I see people making is linking to other pages on their website using the keywords that they have chosen for their home page. When you link to a page on your site, use the keywords for that page not the keywords for your home page.

For maximum traffic you should be optimizing each page or blog post on your site for a different keyword phrase and ensuring that you use the right keyword phrase whenever you create a link.

Hopefully this will help you if you are just starting out with SEO, or if you are guilty of my #1 SEO mistake. Other people may argue that there are other more common mistakes, but this is one that I keep seeing time and time again.

7 Common SEO Mistakes

If you are trying to optimize your website for the search engines it can be very easy to make mistakes, especially if you are new to SEO. I think the easiest way to learn how to optimize your website properly is to look at some common seo mistakes and learn from them. It is always much easier to avoid making mistakes when you know what the most common mistakes are!

1) Ignoring the TITLE Tag
Leaving out your title tag is another common mistake that is also made by the experts. This is the most important area of your SEO to have your keyword. This will show up as the title of your website in the search engines.

2) Using a Flash Website that Does Not Contain HTML
A flash website may appear appealing to you but it is not always appealing to users and search engines cannot always rank them properly. If you still prefer to use a flash website be sure that you include an HTML version of the site.

3) Concentrating Too Much on Meta Tags
Apart from the description meta tag, most search engines pretty much ignore the meta tags. They have been abused in the past and are no longer a reliable way of ranking websites. I see too many people get hung up on their “meta keywords” tag when they should be concentrating on the content of their site and the backlinks.

4) Using Java Script Menus
Search engines do not recognize Java Scripts so you should not use these as the sole method of navigation.  If you do happen to have certain portions of your website that do contain Java Script be sure to create a site map as well to allow the search engines to index all your pages.

5) Not Mentioning Your Keywords Enough
I’ve seen many people try to optimize a web page and only mention the keyword in the TITLE and in the meta tags. You must mention the keyword in the body of the page as well – a few times including at the beginning, middle and end of the page is good, but be careful not to overdo it.

6) Ignoring Your URLs
When you create additional pages on your site be sure to use the target keywords for that page in the filename.

7) Targeting the Wrong Keywords
This is the one of the most common SEO mistakes. Before you decide on your keywords be sure to do some research so you can be sure that people are actually searching on these keywords AND they convert well. Also check out the competition and make sure you have a chance of ranking on the first page of the search engines.

Hopefully you can learn from some of these common SEO mistakes and get your site ranked well in the search engines!

In most of my posts I have concentrated on different ways to get a better search engine rank.

Today I’m going to talk about how not to get a better search engine rank. It is good to know what you need to do to improve your search engine ranking, but what about what you shouldn’t do?

(1) Hidden Text- some websites use underhand techniques such as making massive lists of keywords on their pages, but making these keywords the same color as their page e.g. white text on a white page. These keywords are invisible to a human visitor looking at the web page, but they are visible to the search engines. Search engine ranking alogorithms are highly complex, so to thing that they can’t spot a simple technique like this is niave. Search engines could potentially penalize your website for using hidden keyword tricks.

(2) Keyword Spamming – this is similar to the above, but this time the keywords are not hidden. Some webmasters think that stuffing as many keywords as possible throughout the page and the meta keyword tags will improve their ranking in Google and other search engine rankings. The truth is that this could end up having a detrimental effect on your ranking. Take a look at the keyword density of your main competitors and aim for something similar to them instead. It is also useful to note that the major search engines don’t really pay much attention to the meta keywords tag, so if you are using this on your page you don’t need to put more than 4 or 5 keyword phrases in there.

(3) Too Many Links – don’t list too many links on a single page. The Google Webmaster guidelines suggest having less than 100 links on a single page. It is also good practise to ensure that you link only to high quality sites as you could be penalized for linking to “bad neighborhoods”.

(4) Using Flash Intros – some websites have fancy flash intros. Although these can sometimes look nice, they will not do anything for your search engine rank. Search engines cannot understand flash and graphics, so if you must have a flash intro, try to ensure that you also get some text on the page with your keywords in there as well.

(5) Submitting your Site to Search Engines – although this one is likely to do you no harm, it won’t help either. The way to get a good ranking in the main search engines is with good, keyword rich, fresh content and lots of high quality backlinks to your site. I have another blog post on why you don’t need to submit your site to search engines.

(6) Using Other Peoples’ Content – this is one of my pet hates, as I have had people steal my website content a few times in the past. Aside from the fact that this generally infringes copyright laws, it is not going to help you get a better search engine rank. You have a much better chance of getting a high ranking with fresh, unique content.

(7) Javascript or Graphical Based Navigation – When creating a menu or a way to navigate your website it is best to make this text based. Search Engines do not read javascript and cannot see the text that may be on images or graphics. If you have to have a javascript or image based menu, ensure that you also have a text based menu on the same page.

Choosing the Right Keyword Phrase

Earlier I talked about researching keywords to get a higher search engine rank. Once you have a big list of keywords from Wordtracker how do you go about picking the right keyword phrase for your website?

Luckily Wordtracker uses an indicator called the KEI, which is the Keyword Effectiveness Index. This gives you a rough idea of how effective a keyword will be. The more searches per day that a keyword has, the higher the KEI will be and the less competitors a keyword phrase has, the higher the KEI will be. In an ideal world you want a phrase that has a high number of searches and a low number of competing pages, but often these are hard to come by. Usually a highly searched on phrase has a lot of competitors and a phrase that is searched on rarely has a much lower number of competitors.

It’s all about finding balance. If you are optimizing an important page on your site such as the index page or a product page, you need to consider your keywords carefully and ensure that you pick a phrase or combination of phrases that has a good number of searches per day. Use the total number of competing pages as an indicator of the competition, but also pay a visit to Google and enter your keywords (without the quotes)  to see which sites have the highest ranking for these keywords. Take a look at these websites and ask yourself is this keyword too competitive for you? If the answer is “yes”, then it is back to your keyword list to check out some other phrases.

When optimizing an inner page of your website of a blog post you don’t need to spend as much time analyzing this. You don’t need to worry as much about picking a phrase with a high number of daily searches. You can pick a low competition, low search phrase and benefit from optimizing lots of different inner pages and blog posts for a wide range of low competition phrases. You can generate a lot of easy traffic to your website using this method.

Keyword research is an area that many webmasters forget about when they launch a website, with more time and effort being spent on getting the design and the content right. Often it is only later on, when they don’t see a good ranking in the search engines or a flood of visitors, that they start thinking about Keyword Research and SEO.

Keyword research is the first stage in any search engine optimization campaign, ideally done before you have even got to the website design stage. If you are thinking about keywords retrospectively as a result of a poorly performing website, don’t worry – it is still possible to do your keyword research now and go back and update your poorly performing web pages.

There are many tools and methods available for doing keyword research, but the best keyword research tool is Wordtracker. Wordtracker is the industry’s leading keyword research tool and has a massive database containing over 330 million search terms. It can let you know with a few clicks of your mouse what the most popular keyword phrases in your niche are, along with the number of competing websites and the number of searches per day for Google, Yahoo, MSN, Lycos, Altavista, Ask and AllTheWeb.

The easiest way to use Wordtracker is to use the Universal Search option. Type in your keywords and use the Thesaurus to find related phrases and synonyms, then click on the words that are interesting to you and simply add these to your “basket”. You can also click on the dig icon to find all phrases that contain that phrase. Once you have built up a list of at least 1000 keywords, choose step 3 and select a “Competition Search”. Within seconds you’ll then be given a report of the number of searches per day for each keyword and the number of competing webpages. This will really help you to narrow down on the right keyword phrase for your website.

In my next post I’ll be talking a little more about how to choose the right keyword phrase from your list and how to use the KEI to help you.
